This CD is a live recording on the occasion of Hubert Hoche's 50th birthday.
Works from almost three decades in a wide variety of instrumentations illustrate the great compositional range of this composer. The program opens with a somewhat folkloric early work: Encuentro (1988) for flute and guitar, and concludes with the premiere of Little Pulse for 2 trumpets, 2 horns and euphonium, a work with a faunistic wit. In between, a string quartet entitled Drop: a very original pattern flow. Its beginning a movement at rest in itself, peculiar and absolutely consistent. Then there are some works with flute, interpreted by the fabulous flutist Carin Levine: Ming I for alto flute solo, Hope and delight for alto flute (here a beautiful "substitute" for the Japanese shakuhachi) and koto, the latter decidedly enchanting. The work leads into a kind of trance through many repetitions. A far-driven polyrhythm fascinates in X-way for flute and percussion, but also very serious existential tones are struck, partly with voice input of the players, in too short for for flute and violin. Great is the centerpiece premiere of Natural Forces for flutes, clarinets, trombone, violin and percussion. Some guitar pieces draw attention to smaller forms, such as the desert scenes titled "mild babble," "after sunset," and "on the right track." Outstanding performers guarantee exceptional listening pleasure. An excellently equipped booklet introduces the world of the composer - and that of his interpreters. A highly recommended release.
